Thesis Title: Writing Acts: The Emergence of Mechanised Writing and the Body of Modernity, 1714-1905

About

I am lecturer working between Visual Culture and Material Culture, focussing on technology, the modernist body, and the history of writing techniques, at both BA and MA level. I am based in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Kingston University, convening classes on Visual Culture and the History of Technology for students of Graphic Design, Illustration, Product Design, Interior Design and History of Art and Design; and I am the co-leader of the MA in Visual Culture at the University of Westminster.

My research interests are centred in and around the typewriter, and include eighteenth and nineteenth century inscription technologies and techniques, the history and philosophy of the interplay between technology and craft, as well as that between spiritualism and magic. These research interests are drawn into exploring the history of the epistemological status of inscription.

With a background in politics, advertising and publishing, I also work as a publisher, editor, interviewer and publishing consultant. I am an Editor of the Journal of Visual Culture and the Publisher and Managing Editor of Paperweight: A Newspaper of Visual and Material Culture. As a publishing consultant I have worked as the Publishing Editor for KIOSK: An Annual of Art, Design and Architecture from 2006 to 2009, and most recently have worked as the Publishing Development Consultant for the Live Art Development Agency on Unbound, its online bookshop and publication promotion vehicle.

I am also the Assistant Project Manager for the Voices in the Visual Arts Oral History Project, documenting the history of design history as a discipline/subject area through the stories of those individuals involved in its formation.
